Poultry farmers in Lagos seek FG’s compensation for losses to bird flu

Poultry farmers in Aiyedoto Poultry Farm Estate in Lagos State have urged the Federal Government to intervene in the plight of farmers affected by avian influenza (bird flu) in 2021.

President of the group, Saliu Rasheed, who spoke while receiving over 3,000 points of lay birds donated by the Lagos State government, said some farmers had died while awaiting intervention from the government.

He said the compensation would strengthen the industry and guarantee employment opportunities for the population. Besides, Rasheed urged the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to make more funds available to help farmers grow the industry and, in turn, contribute to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of the country.

He, however, appreciated Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and the state’s former Commissioner for Agriculture, Abisola Olusanya, for their support saying, “This will go a long way in ensuring the beneficiaries’ returns to business in earnest and support the growth of their business.”
